Use a handkerchief instead of tissues

Did you know, the amount of tissue paper we use could go around the planet every 2 minutes, or travel to the sun and back every 10 days!

You may associate handkerchiefs with your grandparents, however, they were uknowingly doing their bit to save the planet and reduce paper consumption.

Reducing my carbon footprint

I decided to try and cut down on my carbon footprint by growing my own food. I started with red peppers and now im trying an avocado tree!

If you want to try too, here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Take note of the top and bottom of the avocado seed – this will be vital for the growing process
  2. Wash the seed to remove any avocado residue
  3. Peel the outer shell off as this will prevent the roots and flower sprouting
  4. one third of the way down, pierce the seed, at a downward angle, with 3 cocktail sticks. (Birthday candles work just as well as you can see in my picture!)
  5. Place on top of a clear glass or plastic cup so you can see when it starts to sprout
  6. Fill the cup with water until at least half of the seed is covered.
  7. Place on your windowsill

Now its a waiting game to see when your roots start to grow – good luck!

Milk delivery & yoghurt making

I never buy plastic milk bottles or plastic yoghurt pots because I have a regular milk delivery in reusable glass bottles. I then make my own yoghurt from the milk in a thermos flask and store it in glass jars. I never need to buy yoghurt in plastic pots because each new batch is started using yoghurt from the previous batch. I flavour it with tinned fruit. Simples!

Put a brick in your toilet cistern

One of the easiest ways to save water, is to reduce your toilet’s daily use. Drop a brick, handful of marbles or some other weighted, waterproof object into your toilet cistern to reduce the amount of water it takes to fill and flush your tank.

There will be less water in the bowl, and less of your water bill going down the drain.
