Pallet Vegetable Planter

Using old pallets, I laid 3 on the ground and then sawed 4 more in half to make the sides. Once I had attached the sides, I lined it with recycled plastic feed bags and weed cover membrane. I then filled it with well rotted manure from our muck heap ready for planting. 🙂

Sow pumpkin seeds for Halloween

Why not try growing your very own pumpkin for halloween this year?!

Spring is the perfect time of year to sow your pumpkin seeds.Follow the steps below:

  1. Place the seeds on their side, 1cm deep, in a 8cm pot of compost.
  2. Keep the compost well watered and in a sunny spot.
  3. In May, move your seedlings in to a colder spot, ready for moving outside.
  4. After a week, plant your seedlings outside.
  5. Make sure you water regularly. Try cutting the bottom off of a used plastic bottle and place upside down, lid removed, in to the soil next to the plant. This will allow the water to reach the roots.
  6. Feed with natural fertiliser every 10-14 days.
  7. Once your fruit starts to grow, make sure they sit off the ground on a tile or piece of glass.

Wait for the harvest!

Buy local produce!

When you shop at your local supermarket, many of the food items you buy will have travelled over 1,500 miles to get there!

However, if you buy locally-grown food, you are cutting down on these miles, which, in turn, reduces the carbon footprint and helps your local community. Not only is that better for the environment, the food is also fresher and packed with more nutrients. Most of the time, you can even buy it directly from the growers themselves!

So, why not help reduce your food’s carbon footprint, and head to your local farmer’s market next time you need a shop?
